OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE SLOUGHI CLUB (UK)

The Officers and the Committee of the Sloughi Club wish to make it clear that we are shocked and appalled by the photographs of the BOB Sloughi at the recent Russian Sighthound Championship Show. This dog is clearly undernourished and has obviously been denied basic care and attention as is outlined in the Club’s Code of Ethics.
The Sloughi Club UK has worked hard to promote the breed in this country, offering breed seminars to anyone who has an interest in the breed. We have also worked with the Kennel Club to be removed from the Breedwatch scheme, in fact we received word only a few weeks ago that as no reports of any Sloughis being “significantly underweight” have been reported for 3 years this is about to be lifted. The Sloughi in the UK has received much positive publicity in recent times including a television interview with the Crufts Best of Breed as well as being short listed for Group placings several times.

We, as a Committee, condemn both the judge who saw fit to give this dog Best of Breed, and also the owners/exhibitors who are responsible for the care of this emaciated hound.

Please be aware that if any Sloughi was shown in the UK in such a condition the Club would be the first to take action.

Please see below the official Club response to the situation with the global condemnation of the emaciated Sloughi who won BOB at the recent Russian Sighthound Championships.

Excellent news from the Kennel Club. The following was sent to the Club Chairman & Secretary:

Dear Both

RE: Point of Concern – Significantly Underweight in the Sloughi

I write following the meeting of the Breed Standards and Conformation Sub-Group on the 1st February 2017.

Following the submission of mandatory health monitoring reports from judges, viewing your breed at Championship level, the Sub-Group would like to put forward a recommendation that the breed be removed from Breed Watch with the point of concern “significantly underweight”, as there have been no reports for this concern since the third quarter of 2014.

I would very much appreciate your thoughts and value your time in considering this matter.

Kind regards

The present Club Officers & Committee have been working hard to achieve this result, trying to educate people at seminars etc as to the structure of the Sloughi and the conditions in which the breed is expected to work. What is normal for this hound is considered underweight for the majority of other breeds. This is the best possible result and a major step forward for the Sloughi in the UK.

Club Members Carol Davies, Anne Chapman-Damms and Lisa Smith are thrilled to say that at LKV Dog Show, Genk, Belgium, Sahsheer Shiana Khali (Tara) and Sahsheer Sandara (Gus) were both graded excellent and awarded the CAC.
Subject to Belgian KC confirmation this now makes them both Belgian Champions  Tara went on to BOB and shortlisted in the group.
This tops off an amazing month where both of them have gained their International and Dutch Champion titles in addition to their Belgium titles.

This brings to an end an amazing 12 months which has seen Tara as Top Sloughi in the U.K. & 2nd Top Bitch in The Netherlands 2016, & Gus Top Dog in both the UK and The Netherlands 2016.

Also their Mum, Ziva (Falconcrag Sahsheer), is Top Brood Bitch Rare Breeds (all breeds) 2016, bred by Steph Marston-Pollock

This is an amazing result for the UK Sloughis and shows they are capable of winning overseas against stiff competition.
